Ancient streets. Via Traiana

The Apulian territory, a natural bridge over the Mediterranean, was already crossed in Roman times by an important road network that boosted commercial exchanges and activities. In fact, in this itinerary we will follow the Via Traiana that reached Daunia, up to Brindisi. Starting from Troia, the road crossed the Ponte Rotto sul Cervaro in Castelluccio dei Sauri and the Ponte Rotto sul Carapelle, which now lie in ruins. The construction of the Via Traiana was a fundamental step for the development of this city dedicated to the marketing of the agricultural products of the Tavoliere. Near Canosa di Puglia, the road runs along the Roman bridge across the Ofanto (ancient Anfidus). Another evidence of this ancient Roman road is the Fragment of a military column; then we reach Egnazia, which became important thanks to the Via Traiana and to the port. These traces are now preserved in the National Museum "Giuseppe Andreassi" and Archaeological Park of Egnazia.
